Four years ago, CEO Dan Price slashed his own salary of almost $1 million to raise those of his employees, bringing the minimum salary of every employee to $70,000. Now he’s opening an office in a new city and promising another salary increase.

In 2015, he was heralded as one of the most generous employers. Two weeks after he made the initial announcement, the company was flooded with 4,500 resumes and new customer inquiries jumped from 30 a month to 2,000 a month. Price’s belief is that by investing in his employees, the company will grow faster. Sadly, most employers don’t get this. If you want to increase loyalty, engagement and productivity start by paying people what they are worth.

Today, many companies will not hire the candidates who are considered “Overqualified.” However, ignoring the “overqualified” because you think they are too expensive, and you can hire 2 employees for the price of one, will eventually cost you in the long term. You can’t Google experience.

Most people don’t expect ridiculous salaries or raises, they just want to be paid what they are worth. It’s a shame how we have designated employees as “liabilities” while machines and buildings are assets. We invest in assets; we limit liabilities.

At the University of Pennsylvania, researchers discovered that businesses that spent 10% of their revenue on capital improvements saw a 3.9% productivity increase. But get this—when that same 10% was invested in employees, productivity went up 8.5%.

Additionally, I see many job seekers and employees, whether interviewing for a job or negotiating for a raise, undersell themselves. Learn to stand up for yourself. Learn to say no. Don’t be afraid to ask for the salary you deserve. It’s about the skills, experience and value you bring to the table. Know your worth and don’t be afraid to ask for it.

The future of IOT is AI

   

There is a clear intersection between the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). IoT is about connecting machines and making use of the data generated from those machines. AI is about simulating intelligent behaviour in machines of all kinds. Clearly an overlap.

As IoT devices will generate vast amounts of data, then AI will be functionally necessary to deal with these huge volumes if we’re to have any chance of making sense of the data.

Data is only useful if it creates an action. To make data actionable, it needs to be supplemented with context and creativity. IoT and AI together is this context, i.e. ‘connected intelligence’ and not just connected devices.

Traditional methods of analysing structured data and creating action are not designed to efficiently process the vast amounts of real-time data that stream from IoT devices. This is where AI-based analysis and response becomes critical for extracting optimal value from that data.

AI is beneficial for both real-time and post event processing:

• Post event processing – identifying patterns in data sets and running predictive analytics, e.g. the correlation between traffic congestion, air pollution and chronic respiratory illnesses within a city centre
• Real-time processing – responding quickly to conditions and building up knowledge of decisions about those events, e.g. remote video camera reading license plates for parking payments

Actually to be more accurate when I say AI, I really mean machine learning. It is machine learning that provides the ability to detect patterns in data presented. It learns from these patterns in order to adjust the ways in which it then analyses that data or triggers actions.

With machine learning embedded into an IoT environment you get more ‘connected intelligence’:

• Predictive analytics – ‘What will happen?’
• Prescriptive analytics – ‘What should we do?’
• Adaptive/continuous analytics – ‘What are the appropriate actions or decisions?  How should the system adapt to the latest changes?’

We are now also seeing AI being implemented in the edge. With greater processing power and longer battery life manufacturers are implementing AI processes in ‘edge’ devices. Referring to the remote video camera example – you don’t need to transmit the whole video, only data based on certain triggers, e.g. number and location of parking spaces or ANPR.  This can be determined on the edge device.

We’re now seeing significant investment in the convergence of IoT and AI and even more sure with this ‘intelligent edge’. Microsoft announced in May its vision for intelligent cloud / Intelligent Edge. Azure IoT Edge will enable low-power devices to run containers and perform artificial intelligence locally but retain a connection to the cloud for management and modelling. Similarly in April, Amazon Web Services (AWS) updated its edge computing platform, Greengrass, to incorporate machine learning.

So what does this all mean for the public sector? As the technology matures we will start to see the scenarios for IoT develop significantly beyond the traditional use cases we see today.

A few examples:

• Real-time public safety – thinking back to the video camera analysis example above – vehicle, facial and other visual patterns can be actioned sooner for quicker decision and response by the emergency services
• The ability of machine learning algorithms to foresee possibilities of a device failing will enable remote predictive maintenance to be a reality within a smart city context from street furniture to intelligent building management.
• The technology will be critical for autonomous vehicles to ingest millions of events from vehicles to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency for driver less transportation.

IoT and AI combined could be the trigger to really drive smart city business cases – creating not just the connected city but the connected intelligent city.

'How we built India's biggest robot company'

In 2008, engineering student Samay Kohli wanted to build a humanoid robot, but his professor told him it would not be possible.

Along with his fellow student Akash Gupta, not only did they achieve that task, but they have also built GreyOrange, a multi-national robotics company based in India and operating across Asia.

"We've done some stuff that India was not supposed to do," Mr Kohli told the BBC. "People are not supposed to build hardware, robot products, out of India and we've been able to do that."

So how did GreyOrange grow from an engineering classroom to an international robotics player?

Mr Kohli and Mr Gupta proved their teacher wrong, building India's first humanoid robot, which they called Acyut. They then entered their creation in kung fu competitions and international robot football championships.

The team also won several robotic competitions around the world.

But it was a different passion that has seen GreyOrange grow - not for sport, but for online shopping.

New consumers

India's online shopping boom is driving massive international investment in the country's e-commerce sector

The e-commerce sector in India has seen unprecedented growth in the last few years.

Roughly 350 million Indian citizens are online and according to international payment company WorldPay, that will nearly double by 2020, when they will spend $63.7bn (£51.8bn) online.

Despite companies often making a loss as they offer deeper and deeper discounts to attract customers, investors have flooded into the sector. More than $5bn (£4bn) of private investment was ploughed into the sector in 2015, according to global consultancy PwC.

Amazon recently announced it would invest an additional $3bn in India, on top of the $2bn it announced in 2014.

While online retailing is only a part of e-commerce, it is the area that many see as the one with the biggest growth potential.

Those retailers servicing millions of consumers will need to keep their goods in warehouses, and those warehouses need to be efficient. That's where GreyOrange has positioned itself.

In India, GreyOrange says it has 90% of the warehouse automation market and it has worked with leading e-commerce and logistics firms in the country.

They also run eight offices in five countries and employ more than 650 people.

Butler does it

GreyOrange claims AI robot Butler can make a warehouse up to five times more efficient

"Warehouses are everywhere and they are supposed to become more and more intelligent as consumer demand increases.'' says Mr Kohli.

GreyOrange has two different robots to help warehouses become more productive.

Butler, an artificial intelligence-powered robotic system, helps pick products from shelves in the warehouse.

''A single person would pick about 100 to 120 items in one hour. With our Butler robot, he is able to pick 400 to 500 items every hour." Mr Kohli says.

The second robot, Sorter, automates the sorting of outgoing packages in a distribution centre.

They say that the robots they already have installed can potentially sort three million packages every day.

One of the biggest challenges to the company's success has been sourcing parts.

''India does not have a very strong hardware ecosystem." explains Paula Mariwala, who invests in technology based start-ups for SeedFund.

"So to source the right products and to get manufacturing going at a large scale in the early stages is particularly difficult. You would not be able to try out different components to have different versions of the product very easily - your time cycles will be longer. ''

The size of the potential prize is what has helped the founders overcome these problems.

''We were looking at how robots are going to be the next revolution that is coming right, the next decade is going to be all about making humans more efficient by using robots more and that's essentially how we got started.'' Mr Kohli says.

''Robots are needed to work with humans and not to replace them. Humans will always be there in the workplace, but robots make a very important part of the ecosystem they work with.

"Ten years ago, every person did not have a computer, today every person has one computer. We look at robots in that sense: as everyone has one computer, in the future they will have one robot with them to help them do their work better.

"It's a trillion-dollar opportunity, that's the space we're fighting in. ''

Step 3: The Above Command will hide my Videos folder from D drive. To Unhide it just Type this command "attrib -s -h D:\Videos"
